How secure is your property?

Take a few minutes to review ten important areas of property security. Identify potential weaknesses, consider how protected you feel, and discover where a closer look may be worthwhile.

How to use this checker

Select the answer that best reflects your current situation in each area. If you are unsure, say so — uncertainty can itself be a reason to investigate further. This is an educational self-assessment, not a prediction of crime or a substitute for a professional survey.

01

Doors, windows and entry points

Are the main entrances, accessible windows, locks and other potential entry points appropriately secured?

02

Boundaries and external access

Consider gates, fences, side access, rear access, outbuildings and how easily someone could approach the property unnoticed.

03

Intruder detection and alarms

Is there suitable detection for the property, and are the alarm system, sensors and notifications tested and understood?

04

CCTV and visibility

If CCTV is installed or needed, consider coverage of key areas, image quality, night-time performance, recording and access to footage.

05

Lighting and natural surveillance

Are entrances and important external areas adequately lit and visible, without creating unnecessary dark or concealed areas?

06

Valuables, equipment and assets

Think about tools, vehicles, stock, electronics, personal valuables and confidential information. Are they appropriately protected?

07

Occupancy and daily routines

Consider periods when the property is empty, opening and closing routines, keys, deliveries and the management of access.

08

Alerts, monitoring and response

Would the right person know about an alarm or incident, and would they know what to do next?

09

Reliability, testing and maintenance

Are existing security devices maintained, tested and kept up to date? Are faults, power or connectivity issues identified?

10

Personal confidence and peace of mind

How safe do you, your household, staff or colleagues feel? Are there specific concerns, past incidents or worries that remain unresolved?
